Starter dreads: honest timeline (6–24 months) and care tips
By Angel African hair braiding | July 30, 2026
People tell us they love their hair and that we don’t take long at all, which matters when you’re starting locs and you want a clean foundation. Here’s the real answer: starter dreads usually start locking in 2–8 weeks, need maintenance about every 4–8 weeks early on, and take 6–24 months to fully mature depending on your texture, your routine, and even Columbus weather.

If you’re in East Columbus near Mock Road and Blacklick, starter dreads are a great choice when you want locs that look intentional now, not “someday.” But the timeline is real. Your locs will go through puffy roots, frizz, budding, and then the slow settle into mature locs.
Our job is to set your foundation right on day one, then keep you on a schedule that protects your hair and keeps your parts clean without retwisting you into breakage.
Your starter locs timeline: what changes between week 2 and month 24
Here’s the honest starter locs timeline we talk through in the chair. It’s not meant to scare you. It’s meant to save you time and avoid panic when your hair starts doing normal loc things.
Weeks 2–8: the “setting” stage
You’ll usually see the first signs of locking in this window. Roots can look looser, especially if you sweat a lot, touch your hair constantly, or keep redoing styles. Coarser textures often hold faster. Finer textures often take longer and need a gentler routine.
Months 2–6: budding and frizz (normal, not failure)
This is when a lot of people think their starter dreads “aren’t working.” The loc starts forming little dense spots, and frizz shows up. In Columbus summers, humidity makes swelling and frizz more obvious. In winter, the air is dry and shrinkage can make your locs look shorter and feel tighter.
Months 6–24: maturity and stability
By this point your locs tend to stay together better, and maintenance becomes less stressful. Most people land somewhere in the 6–24 month range for full maturity. Your hair texture, your upkeep, and how gentle you are between appointments makes the biggest difference.
Quick reality check: your starter dreads appointment is about building the foundation. Our Starter Dreads service is 150 minutes in the chair at $100, but the real “longevity” comes from what you do for the next 6–24 months.
Starter dread maintenance that actually helps (and what we skip on purpose)
The best starter dreads care is usually simple. Our team is big on communication, and we respect requests like “no heavy products” because buildup is one of the fastest ways to slow down healthy locking.
A simple routine to get more weeks out of your retwist
- Wash, but keep it clean: Yes, you can wash starter dreads. Use a residue-free shampoo. If you tend to use butters and heavy oils, pause those while your locs are forming. That slick feeling often turns into buildup later.
- Dry completely every time: Damp locs can start smelling musty and can even mildew. After washing, give yourself real drying time. In humid Columbus summers, air-drying can take longer than you think.
- Hands off between visits: Twisting in the mirror every night, constantly re-parting, and pulling at new growth makes roots look messy fast. Let the loc form.
- Satin or silk at night: A bonnet or scarf cuts down on frizz and lint. It also helps your retwist stay neat longer.
- Go easy on tight styles: Early on, tight ponytails and constant updos can stress your edges and thin your roots. If you need a style for work, let us know and we’ll keep the tension reasonable.
- Pool and gym plan: Swimming is fine. Wear a swim cap if you can. Afterward, rinse your locs well and shampoo when you get home. Chlorine and sweat left sitting can dry your hair out.
Prep matters. Arrive with your hair clean, detangled, and fully dry. And skip heavy oils or products the day of your appointment. That one habit alone can help your starter locs hold cleaner and stay lighter.
Why starter dreads unravel early (and how we fix it)
Unraveling usually isn’t a mystery. It’s a handful of patterns we see all the time, especially in the first couple months.
Common causes: washing too aggressively, not drying fully, over-using heavy product, constant friction (hoodies, cotton pillowcases), and waiting too long to clean up new growth.
What helps: gentler washing, full dry time, satin at night, and a steady maintenance schedule. And don’t over-retwist. We’d rather keep your hair healthy than twist you too tight and create stress at the root.
Retwist starter dreads every 4–8 weeks: signs it’s time to come back
Early on, most people do best with maintenance every 4–8 weeks. If you’re very active, sweat a lot, or your hair unravels easily, you may land closer to the 4-week side. If your hair holds well, 6–8 weeks can be plenty.
Here’s how you’ll know it’s time to rebook: roots look loose, you see sections combining, your parts are disappearing, or you’re starting to pick at unraveling. People also come back when they want that fresh, neat look again. We hear a lot of “Always do me right every time, ” and we take that seriously.
East Columbus convenience matters. We’re a good fit for Mock Road and Blacklick clients who want to stay consistent, plus neighbors in Reynoldsburg, Whitehall, Bexley, Gahanna, Pickerington, and nearby areas. If you’re balancing kids or shift work, let us know what your schedule looks like. We’ll help you pick a maintenance cadence you can actually stick to so your starter dreads don’t turn into a constant redo.
If you’re ready to start, schedule your Starter Dreads appointment and we’ll talk through section size, upkeep, and a realistic plan to get you through that first 6 months without unnecessary stress.
